Awards:

2022 Nierstein Frühburgunder

Golden Grape Award – Gold
Wein.plus 88

Herb, somewhat smoky, tobacco-like and slightly peppery-etheric scent of predominantly dark berries with floral nuances and a hint of bacon. Clear, polished, juicy fruit, rather tart, smoky, subtly roasted and a little peppery notes, fine, ripe tannin and a bit of bite, juniper tones, good sustainability, salt in the background, herbal nuances, a bit of bittersweet chocolate, very good finish.

2023 Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite Riesling

Golden Grape Award – Gold
Wein.plus 90

Right firm, dried-plant to herbal citrus stone fruit scent with blackcurrant aromas as well as delicate nutty, dried-mushroom, tobacco, and smoky hints. Ripe, again relatively firm, juicy, yet dry fruit, fine acidity and a bit of grip, again somewhat smoky and nutty on the palate, partly dark minerality, sustainable on the palate, certain depth, delicate melt, very good, finely juicy and spicy finish with a hint of vegetable oil, vanilla, artichokes, and dark spice. Shows origin.

2023 Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite Riesling

James Suckling 94

The interplay of deep peach and apricot fruit with toasty lees character and wet-stone minerality makes this an excellent expression of the special terroir of Rheinhessen’s Red Slope. Serious slatey power in the very long finish, yet this remains medium-bodied and almost graceful. Vegan. Drink or hold.

2024 Pettenthal Riesling

James Suckling 92

This well-rounded dry riesling has very good harmony, plenty of candied orange fruit and an impressive mineral structure on the quite compact, medium-bodied palate. This also gives it excellent drive in the long, focused finish. Vegan. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

2024 Nierstein Riesling from Roten Hang

James Suckling 90

With its ample white peach and rose hip flavors, this juicy, medium-bodied dry riesling has the pronounced stony minerality that we expect from this terroir. Very good harmony and so much life in the expressive finish. November 2025.

2022 Nierstein Spätburgunder

James Suckling 90

With its crisp, lemony acidity and slightly grainy tannins, this is a cool and restrained expression of the ripe 2022 vintage, but there’s no denying the mid-palate depth and how the structure builds in the dry forest floor finish. November 2025.

2024 Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling Auslese

Robert Parker 91

Picked along with the dry version, the 2024 Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling Auslese is bright and vital in color and opens with an intense and elegant bouquet of pineapples, passion fruit and other tropical fruit aromas. Round and lush on the palate, this is an exuberant, sweet yet also savory and saline Riesling with fine tannins and crisp phenol grip thanks to a short maceration and gentle pressing. It was bottled in April after four months on the lees. 7.5% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in September 2025.

2026 falstaff Weinguide

The Huff family’s vines – winemakers since 1710 – are located on the world-famous Roter Hang in Nierstein. Helga and Dieter Huff have shaped the last 50 years, and today their sons Stefan and Daniel share the work. With the youngsters Jakob and Philipp, the next generation is already growing into the winery. The current collection is thoroughly impressive, with wines such as the ‘Alte Reben’ from the Hipping vineyard and the elegant, off-dry Kabinett. However, the 2024 Beerenauslese is surprising – and in a year that produced very little noble sweet wine throughout Germany.

93 2024 »Alte Reben« Nierstein Riesling Hipping trocken
Malty, herbal aroma reminiscent of yellow flowers. The fruit captivates with fresh pineapple and mandarin. Smoky, delicately spicy, underscored by the influence of the Roter Hang. Rich in extract, phenolic on the palate. Dense, grippy minerality characterises the texture. Lively, supporting acidity. 12% ABV.

92 2024 Nierstein Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite Riesling trocken
Ripe aromas of yellow tropical fruits characterise the initial bouquet. Delicate lilac blossom with a hint of ground white pepper. Rich in extract, delicately fruity and spicy on the palate with lively acidity. Orange zest and ripe quince. Mineral and malty finish. 12% ABV.

91+ 2022 “Reservé” Pinot Blanc trocken
Restrained bouquet. Predominantly white flowers, wet stone, dried sage, white tea, hint of smoke. Delicate citrus notes. Melting and full-bodied on the palate. Well-integrated acidity. Mineral finish. Phenolic impression lingers in the aftertaste. 13% ABV.

91 2024 Riesling Kabinett feinherbfalstaff Tipp
Aroma of light flowers, red apple, apricot and peach, accompanied by sweet citrus fruits. On the palate, it has a well-balanced acidity, delicate, well-integrated sweetness, mirabelle plum and peach, a smooth and light character, good drinkability, perfect for the terrace. 10% ABV.

91+ 2022 Niersteiner Rosenberg Spätburgunder trocken
Dark cherry red with peppery wood aromas on the nose. Leather, dark tobacco and cloves. Fruit reminiscent of dried plums and blackberries. Soft, ripe tannins on the palate, harmoniously accompanied by a juicy, unobtrusive acidity. Dark chocolate on the finish. Delicately mineral. 13% ABV.

96 2024 Niersteiner Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling Beerenauslese
A delicate botrytis, rock dust, blackcurrant, honey, black pepper, candied orange. On the palate, viscosity and crisp acidity come together, giving the wine an almost drinkable lightness. Penetratingly tactile and mineral on the finish. 6% ABV.

2026 Vinum Weinguide

Riesling and Pinot Noir are absolutely dominant here, and so the Niersteiner Chardonnay is the only wine outside this range this time. But it has no reason to hide, as the wine is characterised by clear fruitiness and tastes wonderfully fresh. The basic Riesling wines have no reason to hide either – quite the contrary. The Gutsriesling vom Löss, with its delicate apricot notes, is our special recommendation. Of course, the single-vineyard wines are once again the flagship products of this traditional Nierstein winery, led by the Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite from the Pettenthal vineyard, an expressive wine with a polished, long finish. And the Hipping impresses with its vibrant tension and slender stature. The 2024 sweet wines from the Schloss Schwabsburg vineyard are characterised by crystal-clear fruit, the Auslese reminiscent of dried apricots, the Beerenauslese revealing aromas of figs and currants. The 2022 Pinot Noirs show off the exceptional vintage to its best advantage: with precise cherry fruit and a clear, polished tannin structure. Daniel and Stefan Huff are responsible for this 29-hectare estate in the Schwabsburg district of Nierstein. In addition to Riesling, 40 percent of the vineyards are planted with Burgundy varieties, both white and red.

2026 Eichelmann Weinguide

The Pinot Noirs all show great substance and skilful use of wood. The estate wine is pleasantly light and accessible. The Niersteiner already shows exciting smoky notes and ripe berry fruit, while the Rosenberg is similar in style, but slightly more intense and powerful in every respect. The juicy Chardonnay impresses with its clear fruitiness. The pleasantly dry Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite is the clear leader of the dry Riesling line-up, with a slight spontaneous character, firm acidity and plenty of tension. The remaining dry Rieslings all play with a hint of sweetness, making them accessible early on. We particularly like the slightly floral, spicy Rote Hang Riesling and the slightly smoky, wonderfully salty Schloss Schwabsburg. The Beerenauslese from the same vineyard leads the three strong residual sweet wines. All three have an enormously refreshing acidity, which makes the sweetness wonderfully balanced and unobtrusive. The Kabinett is accessible with cool fruit, the Auslese shows clear yellow fruit, and the Beerenauslese shows exciting spice and honey notes in addition to ripe fruit. A strong showing!

2023 Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling Beerenauslese

James Suckling 94

This delicious BA is wonderfully floral and succulent, with a wide spectrum of stone and exotic fruit aromas. Not enormously concentrated, but with impeccable balance and clarity. Then the long, fresh and elegant finish pulls you back for more. December 2024.

2023 Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling Beerenauslese

Robert Parker 96

The Niersteiner 2023 Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling Beerenauslese is clear and intense on the nose that shows perfect raisin aromas intermingled with crystalline terroir notes. Dense and round on the palate, this is an elegant, savory and crystalline Riesling with remarkable finesse and savoriness. The finish is saline and sensual, with finesse and a playful fruit character. The sweetness is uplifted by the crystalline acidity and the overall finesse and piquancy. This is a fabulous BA. It was filled into 375-milliliter bottles with 6.5% stated alcohol and sealed with a natural cork. Tasted in September 2024.

2023 Hipping Alte Reben Riesling Trocken

James Suckling 93

This wine combines the ripe stone fruit and mandarin orange aromas that we associate with this GG site with garden herb and tobacco leaf freshness. Elegant, medium-bodied palate with polished acidity and a long, silky finish in spite of the touch of tannin. December 2024.

2023 Hipping Alte Reben Riesling trocken

Robert Parker 93+

From 40-year-old vines harvested in two passages, the Niersteiner 2023 Hipping Alte Reben Riesling trocken is fine, intense and elegant as well as smoky on the finely flinty and lemony, very attractive nose. Kept on the mash for a whole day and vinified in oval 1,200-liter oak vats (stücks) until June this year, this is a full-bodied, dense, ripe and almost opulent yet elegant and balanced Riesling with fine acidity, good tension, mineral finesse and stimulating crystalline and saline acidity. Very long and intense on the finish yet not alcoholic, this is a substantial Hipping with excellent aging potential. It’s a little overripe and sweetish (even though the residual sugar is lower than in 2022). 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in September 2024.

2023 Pettenthal Riesling trocken

Robert Parker 92

Aged on the lees until June this year, the Niersteiner 2023 Pettenthal Riesling trocken is deep, pure and smoky on the elegant, distinctive and flinty nose that reveals a ripe and elegant domestic fruit aroma and some overripe Riesling berries. Drier than the 2022, which was a little sweetish, the 2023 Pettenthal is a full-bodied, round, refined and elegant dry Riesling with textural richness but also finesse and a stimulating saline and savory as well as fruity finish. It’s quite creamy and with super ripe fruit aromas that are even reminiscent of raisins. 12% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in September 2024.

2023 Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling trocken

Robert Parker 93

Fermented in large oak (stück) and aged sur lie until June this year, the Niersteiner 2023 Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling trocken is intense and slightly stony on the nose that is otherwise reminiscent of apple compote. Very elegant and silky on the palate, this is a full-bodied, round, lush and intense, quite rich but always finessed and stimulating saline Riesling that outperforms the Pettenthal this year. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in September 2024.

2023 Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling Auslese

James Suckling 94

This excellent wine combines a very modern purity with the succulence and textural complexity we expect from riesling Auslese from the Rhine Valley. Stacks of stone fruit character but also notes of white currants and hibiscus. Long, very fresh finish. The tingling spritz of carbon dioxide helps make the finish wonderfully refreshing. December 2024.

2023 Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling Auslese

Robert Parker 94

The Niersteiner 2023 Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling Auslese is deep, pure, refined and aromatic on the saline and flinty nose that is reminiscent of raspberries. Sweet and round yet delicate and savory on the palate, this is a charmingly light, refined and aromatic Auslese based on overripe yet healthy berries. Vinified in stainless steel, this is a savory, slatey and salivating Riesling Auslese with remarkable character, finesse and sensuality. 7% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in September 2024.

2025 Eichelmann Wineguide

Led by the powerful and complex Rehbacher Steig, which displays earthy notes and ripe fruit aromas, the outstanding Rieslings dominate once again. Behind it is the enormously balanced, open Hipping, a wine with wonderful intensity. The fruit-driven Kabinett is uncomplicated, the Riesling from Löss is ripe, floral and juicy, while the Rote Hang captivates with its spicy nose, fullness and power. The fruit-driven Schloss Schwabsburg offers a little more intensity and lively acidity. The young Beerenauslese impresses with clear fruit, lush sweetness and penetrating freshness. The Silvaner displays typical nutty notes and creaminess. The copper-coloured Pinot Gris captivates with unusual blood orange and red berry aromas, a hint of smoke and delicate grip. The Lagenspätburgunder impresses with peppery spice, noticeable wood, ripe fruit, light tannins and elegant freshness. The estate and local wines from Spätburgunder are smoky with fresh red fruit and a slender body; the estate wine is fruit-driven, while the local wine is more intense and elegant.

2025 falstaff Wineguide

This year, we once again tasted six strong wines – a selection that reflects the full diversity of the Huff portfolio. If one wanted to summarise their essence, one could say: elegance and finesse. The heat that the Rote Hang is capable of radiating seems to be completely ignored by the Rieslings in particular. The Rehbacher Steig is decidedly piquant, while the Silvaner, a classic accompaniment to food, will gain in complexity with a little patience. The Orange Wine, our tip, has what it takes to become a new classic.

92 2023 »Alte Reben« Nierstein Riesling Hipping trocken
Very appealingly fruit-centred on the nose with notes of lemon zest and juicy peach, without seeming one-dimensional. On the palate, peach continues to dominate, very clean, floral components, rather light-bodied, immediately accessible. 12% ABV

92 2023 Nierstein Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite Riesling trocken
Riesling from Pettenthal, but from the south-facing part of the side valley. Despite being on the sunny side, it also has slightly vegetal notes on the nose, green apple, lemon tart, nettle. Fine on the palate, elegantly smooth, dry base, for those who enjoy a bit of spice. 12.5% ABV

91 2023 Nierstein Silvaner trocken
Bright, floral and mineral on the nose. Alongside elderflower and apple, there is also a hint of spice. On the palate, the Silvaner remains light. Unripe walnut, light pear, a little phenolic – this will age well! 12.5% ABV

91 2023 Riesling Kabinett feinherb
Fresh, fruity aroma, apricot, peach, apple, meadow herbs and mint, plus ripe grapefruit, lively. On the palate, beautiful, fresh acidity and fine sweetness that is well integrated, balanced, light fruit, sweet lime, juicy finish. 10% ABV

91+ 2022 »Réserve« Pinot Gris trocken
Rusty orange in the glass, phenolic on the nose, some rosehip tea, deeper orange fruit, warm herbs. On the palate, it strikes a balance between fruit and tannins. Bitter orange marmalade with resistance. Treat it like a red wine at the table. 13% ABV

92+ 2021 Nierstein Rosenberg Spätburgunder trocken
Light in colour with fairly robust wood notes on the nose, cloves, wild strawberries, red plums and juniper. Rather quiet and distinguished on the palate, present tannins, strawberries, some yellow cherries, ethereal hints, a wine to accompany food rather than a blockbuster. 13% ABV

2025 Vinum Wineguide

Although Riesling accounts for just one third of the vines at this Nierstein estate, it consistently leads the way in the respective vintage series. This is also the case in 2023, where the Pettenthal Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite has once again climbed to the top of the winners’ podium.
And so the tasting notes read: hints of apricot and
peach, very juicy on the palate, overall good tension. The other single vineyard Rieslings
from the old vines in Hipping and Schloss Schwabsburg follow close behind. We particularly recommend the dry Riesling from Roter Hang, a refreshing wine with very good value for money. This estate also produces excellent wines with residual sweetness.
The Riesling Kabinett, for example, has a gripping acidity and a fine spiciness, and the Beerenauslese from the Schloss Schwabsburg vineyard is a dense wine with distinct fig aromas. The Pinot Noirs are rather traditional, always transparent and rounded with fine acidity. The very affordable estate wine deserves a special recommendation. Daniel and Stefan Huff are responsible for this 29-hectare estate in the Schwabsburg district of Nierstein. In addition to Riesling, 40 percent of the vineyards are planted with Burgundy varieties.

2022 Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite Riesling trocken

Robert Parker 94

The Niersteiner Pettenthal 2022 Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite Riesling trocken comes from the steepest vineyard of the domaine and is fermented in 500-liter oak casks. Aged on the lees until July this year, this is a deep, pure and flirty Riesling with a warm and elegant seed-fruit aroma intertwined with slate, floral and butter-rice notes. Round and creamy on the palate, this is a rich and textured yet also crystalline and savory Riesling with oak and almond tones but a very diverse texture compared to the other Rieslings of this domaine. The acidity is rather smooth (but persistent), and the fruit is elegant, round and juicy, revealing lots of charm and natural elegance. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in September 2024.

2022 Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite Riesling Trocken

James Suckling 94

Very elegant and polished in spite of the succulence of the ripe citrus and stone fruit notes. Excellent structure and a cool, wet-stone character give this terrific mineral tension. Very cool, intensely zesty and herbal finish. December 2024.

2022 Hipping Alte Reben Riesling trocken

Robert Parker 95

From a 40-year-old plot that was hand-harvested in two steps to collect nothing but fully ripe, golden-yellow grapes, the intensely yellow-colored Niersteiner 2022 Hipping Alte Reben Riesling trocken opens with a clear, refined yet most of all intense and complex nose of fully ripe fruits intertwined with fine saline and stony notes plus hints of lemon juice. Full-bodied and rich yet vital and refined on the palate, this is a generous, very intense and sustainable Hipping Riesling with a long, aromatic and saline finish. This is an impressively salivating 2022 and based on a serious, terroir-generated structure and wrapped with an elegant and playful fruit finesse. This is like yellow silk on red rocks and highly delicious. One of the finest Niersteiner Rieslings I have tasted from this miraculous vintage that caused hydric stress in summer but turned out to finish beautifully. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2024.

2022 Hipping Alte Reben Riesling Trocken

James Suckling 94

Effusive nose of jasmine, orange blossoms and the ripest citrus fruit. Concentrated and juicy, but also warm and elegant on the medium-bodied palate, the pink grapefruit and apple acidity beautifully integrated. In fact, together with the fine tannins and stony minerality, they drive the long finish. February 2024.

2022 Pinot Blanc Réserve Trocken

James Suckling 91

At once creamy with soft acidity, but well structured thanks to the abundant tannins, this is a very unusual, medium- to full-bodied dry pinot blanc. Lots of dried apple and pear character with a touch of butterscotch. Long, firm and very clean finish. December 2024.

2021 Rosenberg Spätburgunder

James Suckling 90

With its delicate forest floor, spice and dried orange peel aromas, this medium-bodied and well-balanced pinot noir is already appealing. Moderate depth, but the healthy tannins in the moderately dry finish suggest this has a few years of life ahead of it. January 2025

2024 Eichelmann Wineguide

The Huff family presents another strong collection this year,
led by the Riesling Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite, which is
concentrated and intense, with fullness and power, substance and
fruit. The Riesling from old vines in Hipping has a wonderfully fruity
bouquet, is full-bodied, juicy, pure and has substance. The Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling displays fine freshness and
great intensity, with subtle citrus notes. It
is harmonious, with fine sweet fruit and grip. The Riesling from the red
slope is spicy, gripping and fresh. The Niersteiner Pinot Gris is
pure, displays yellow fruits, is harmonious and gripping. The Réserve Pinot Gris shows good
concentration and ripe yellow fruits in the
bouquet, is full-bodied in the mouth, substantial, has lots of ripe fruit, good structure
and freshness. In addition to Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir also plays an
important role in the winery – and the trio presented is impressive. The
estate wine is fresh, lively and gripping, the local wine has smoky
notes, good structure and grip, and the wine from Rosenberg has
pure fruit, fullness and juice, good structure and substance.

James Suckling 93

Whether this skin-fermented dry pinot gris qualifies as an orange wine is open to discussion. The cooked quince and candied orange aromas are very striking. I love the interplay of the generous fine-grained tannins and creaminess on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Excellent concentration and length for this challenging vintage, plus animating freshness in the long finish. Matured for two years in 500-liter casks of French oak. December 2024.
